Digital menu and table ordering for a gaming pub

A menu that opens from a QR code, with nothing to install, and a floor that stops chasing paper orders.

The context

META Gaming Pub is a gaming-themed venue in Bagheria, near Palermo: burgers named Charizard and Little Mac, cocktails named Perk-A-Cola. A huge menu that changes often, and a packed room on tournament nights.

The problem
  1. A 150+ item paper menu: reprinting it at every change costs time and money.

  2. Orders taken by hand and carried to the counter, with room for mistakes on busy nights.

  3. Items that need a choice (shot flavour, the spirit in a sour) that end up badly on a notepad.

  4. No overview of which table ordered what, and where each order stands.

The decisions, and why

Every choice has a constraint behind it

The constraint

A customer is there for one evening. Nobody installs an app to order a beer.

The choice

A web app opened from a QR code, with no download and no signup.

Why

A native app would have added an app store, an update to approve and friction that kills conversion at the table. The browser already in the customer's pocket is the only zero-friction channel.

The constraint

Many items aren't a flat price: shots have a flavour, sours have a spirit, milkshakes have a variant.

The choice

Structured per-item variants plus a free-text note on each order line.

Why

Modelling every combination as a separate product would have blown the menu up to hundreds of entries. Variants cover the predictable cases; the free-text note absorbs everything else without making the bartender call the table.

The constraint

On tournament nights the room is full and whoever's at the counter needs to grasp the situation at a glance.

The choice

A staff panel with order entry and table status on a single screen.

Why

Splitting “take the order” and “check the tables” into two sections would have forced constant context switching exactly at peak load, which is when mistakes cost the most.

The constraint

The menu changes often: seasonal items, beers that run out, prices that move.

The choice

A menu the venue manages itself, without going through us for every change.

Why

A menu that needs a call to the agency to change a price stops being updated after two months, and a stale menu is worse than paper. Client autonomy here isn't an extra: it's the condition for the project to survive.

What we built

QR menu

Opens by scanning the code at the table: no app, no account.

150+ products

Seventeen categories, from burgers to IBA cocktails, with per-line variants and notes.

Floor panel

Order entry and table monitoring in a single view.

Phone-first

Designed for the small screen first, the only one the customer will actually use.

The outcome

Paper order slips removed from table service

Menu updated by the venue with no reprinting costs

Orders and table status visible at a glance

Technologies

Next.jsReactTypeScriptTailwind CSSPostgreSQL
An outstanding tool that improved how we manage orders inside the venue. The intuitive interface makes it easy to enter new orders and monitor tables.
